Hotspots of skills in demand

PHP Developers will be in high demand during the first half of 2018 as more organisations utilise this language. This will, in turn, place even greater pressure on an already skills-short area.

Drupal Developers will be sought by large corporates this half. Already the limited number of people with Drupal skills has seen suitable candidates command a considerable salary increase before moving from their current role.

BI Analysts / Data Migration Analysts will be needed too. As companies continue to invest in Big Data, candidates with technology specific skills are sought. For example, many government departments want SAP data migration skills.

Native iOS and Android Developers are in constant demand, which is leading to an even tighter skill shortage and will, in turn, put upward pressure on salaries. Any Developer in this space with solid commercial experience is quickly employed.

Microsoft SQL BI Developers (SSRS, SSIS, SSAS) and Power BI/Visualisation Specialists will be sought given the popularity of these tools for organisations that already have the appropriate Microsoft licences in place.

We will also see continuing demand for Security experts from Security Analysts to Architects. Candidates with web, mobile, application and security operation experience will be required. Australia is adapting to the growing demand for experienced professionals across Security and is candidate short.

Information Security professionals focusing on governance, risk and compliance will be in demand in preparation for the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).

Network Engineers with higher level certificates will be sought across the public sector.

We are also seeing demand for candidates with experience with SCCM SOE builds and integration into Office 365 in response to organisations upgrading to Windows 10. SOE/SCCM Engineers and Senior Desktop Engineers will be required.

Cloud (AWS, Azure, GCP, Private) Hybrid Migration professionals will continue to be sought. Many enterprise and small organisations are benefiting from large-scale Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS). As organisations seek better functionality, this demand will continue.

DevOps professionals will continue to be sought after talent. The growing demand in this area to create scalable environments leans more towards scripting and building adaptable environments. Organisations are pushing for quick builds and deployments and therefore rely on competent Engineers with in-depth scripting skills.

We’re also seeing a need for Network Engineers and Architects with Software Defined Network and Network Functions Virtualisation expertise. Previous networking concepts are being challenged thanks to the growth of Cloud and hybrid environments, with SDN and NFV principles and infrastructure being utilised.
