Hays Construction - January 2010
Hotspots
Estimators are in strong demand as companies continue to bid on Building the Education Revolution (BER) projects as well as deal with repeat client tenders. Foremen/women who are capable of running projects within the BER sector at site level are also sought.
Meanwhile, Project Managers are in demand across all sectors due to a candidate shortage and a push on work volumes. Many Project Managers are also tied up in multiple BER projects. Site Managers are also needed.
The skills shortage will create opportunities for people to move interstate. In order to overcome the shortage, employers are forward-planning for their recruiting needs, often interviewing candidate three months in advance.
The coming quarter
We expect to see an increase in vacancy activity in the first quarter of this year, as many companies prepare for major projects. Some mid tier companies are recruiting permanent candidates, while those companies with BER work are utilising contractors since they are uncertain where their company will be after the completion of these projects.
Executive recruitment
Strong demand exists for senior BD and construction candidates.
Employer trends
Employers involved in BER projects are recruiting candidates quickly before the pool of professional applicants are absorbed by other companies.
The commencement of major projects in 2010 should see focus return to salaries, and we may see some movements as a result.
