Hays Education - July 2008

Hotspots

There is a shortage of teachers of mathematics, design and technology, science, ICT and English. There is also a severe shortage of early childhood teachers for long day care centres since many qualified teachers prefer to teach in schools rather than centres. Temporary childcare workers are also required. The shortage of university graduates and the movement of teachers out of the sector for other higher paid jobs are heating these requirements.

Also in demand are teachers with proven experience in their subject, senior level and extension experience, diploma trained childcare workers and experienced centre directors in early childhood.

The coming quarter

The requirement for teaching professionals will only increase, both for temporary and permanent vacancies, as more and more teachers retire or leave the profession altogether.

Senior recruitment

Senior positions from Head of Department to Principal are plentiful at present.

Candidate trends

While there is a surplus of teachers in many city areas throughout the country, especially new graduates and overseas trained teachers, there is a shortage of teachers in rural and remote area throughout Australia, particularly in Western Australia. There is also a shortage of childcare workers in Sydney, particularly in the West and Southwest. There has been a noticeable decrease in the level of design and technology teachers.

Independent schools and Early Childhood centres are seeking experienced and quality candidates and will continue to do so. There is a huge requirement for casual staff from unqualified to qualified levels.
