The 9 to 5 myth: What it means to you

If you think you're working longer, you're right. It's a sobering thought for many jobseekers, but more than half of Australian companies have increased overtime levels in the last 12 months.

However the end of the typical nine-to-five working day does not mean employers expect the world from their employees. Certainly they expect a strong level of performance, but while overtime is becoming a standard requirement, it is generally used in moderation and is only used at periods of peak workload.

Although it depends on the sector, generally five hours or less overtime, whether per week, at month-end or at year-end, is considered a reasonable level of overtime to meet occasional fluctuating workloads. When recognised and rewarded, used effectively and in moderation, overtime can be a very positive tool for both employers and employees to meet peak workload demands.

In our survey of companies, 26% had decreased overtime levels while 22% said overtime levels remained the same.
