Your ERP job questions, answered

What type of employers are hiring ERP professionals?

Organisations of all sizes across both the public and private sectors are hiring ERP professionals as accelerated digital transformation projects have touched almost every employer.

The widespread adoption of cloud ERP offers lots of opportunities, but there is variation in the projects you could be working on – large organisations will be transitioning their existing ERP system to the cloud while smaller businesses may be starting from scratch.

There are also opportunities in larger organisations which are upgrading from legacy systems, for example, to SAP S/4HANA.

What are the key skills ERP professionals need in 2021?

Employers are looking for ERP professionals with experience implementing cloud ERP systems. Big Data and data management expertise are in high demand as businesses aim to make the most of the data they collect.

It is also beneficial to have knowledge of newer tech like AI, predictive analytics and robotic process automation – so a mindset of continuous learning and staying up-to-date with the latest ERP trends – and often CRM systems - and how your role can evolve to incorporate these is important.

However, don’t neglect your soft skills either. Team management and mentoring, the communication skills to manage stakeholders and an analytical, problem-solving attitude are all musts.

What soft skills are employers looking for in ERP jobs?

Strong communication and stakeholder management skills are a must for most ERP roles as you’ll be engaging with many different areas of the organisation and taking them through upgrades and implementations.

Linked to this are change management skills and IT project management skills, which are extremely highly prized by employers given the sheer amount of IT enabled business change currently taking place.

What salary can I expect to earn in an ERP job in Australia?

Salaries will vary depending on what type of ERP system you’re an expert in and where you’ll be based. In general, ERP Developers tend to earn around $130,000.

ERP Technical Consultants would typically earn around $140,000 and ERP Functional Consultants can command salaries averaging at around $160,000, reaching up to $200,000 if your role is based in major cities like Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Canberra.

What’s new in ERP in 2021?

The adoption of cloud ERP continues to be front and centre for organisations as they seek to harness the extra speed, agility and ease of access it provides. The integration of AI and machine learning capabilities into ERP and CRM systems continues to help drive business efficiencies.

The masses of real-time data generated by the Internet of Things (IoT) is also allowing for exciting new possibilities when it comes to automating processes. To sum up, there’s plenty happening that means lots of opportunities for ERP professionals.
