Using AI to supercharge your job applications

Using AI to supercharge your job applications

The use of AI in job applications is becoming increasingly widespread in Australia, with both job seekers and employers leveraging AI tools to streamline the recruitment process. Many Australian and New Zealand companies, especially large corporations, are adopting AI-powered Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS) to filter resumes and identify the best candidates based on skills, qualifications, and keywords. These systems help employers save time and reduce bias in the hiring process by automating initial screening.

Additionally, AI-driven tools are being used by candidates to optimise their resumes and cover letters for specific job postings. Platforms such as Rezi and Resume.io are gaining popularity in Australia and New Zealand, enabling job seekers to tailor their applications with AI-generated suggestions.

According to recent reports, millions of jobseekers are already using AI when applying for jobs. Research from software brand Capterra found that 73 per cent of candidates have used AI when applying for jobs, which is 15 per cent higher than global figures.

How does AI help with job applications?

While authenticity is still very important throughout the job application process, AI can do much of the heavy lifting, making applying for roles faster and better tailored to particular opportunities. Ways that AI tools can help include:

Resume and cover letter writing

The most common use of AI is for creating resumes and cover letters. ChatGPT or specialised tools such as Rezi can quickly generate resumes and cover letters based on your real life experience, skills and the job you're applying for. These tools tailor the language and highlight relevant achievements, aimed specifically for the job you are applying for.

Interview prep

AI can simulate potential interview questions based on the job description of the role you are applying for and your resume. Practice in answering AI-generated interview questions can help improve your confidence and delivery during the interview stage.

Skills and keyword optimisation

Many companies use ATS (applicant tracking systems) to filter resumes. AI can scan job postings and descriptions to ensure your resume includes the right keywords, helping your application pass through these automated filters.

Online profiles

AI tools can help you improve your LinkedIn profile or professional bio, making your online presence more attractive to recruiters.

Language translation

For international applicants, or candidates for whom English is a second language, AI can help with translating documents into different languages, and then checking spelling and grammar.

How to create a resume using AI

If you’ve never used AI to work on your resume and you’re now starting to feel tempted, here are some tips to get you started:

Choose an AI resume builder

Yes, you can use general AI tools like ChatGPT, but it’s better to use a specific AI resume builder such as Kickresume, Rezi, or Resume.io. These platforms also often offer templates to get you started.

Collate your info

You may already have this as part of your existing resume or on LinkedIn, but pull together into a word document the following information:

  • Job titles and experience
  • Achievements and responsibilities
  • Educational qualifications
  • Skills, technical and human, you possess

Input this information into your chosen AI tool

If you’ve never used ChatGPT it will offer a space for you to enter a prompt. Type in something like:

“Please create me a resume for a sales consultant position with two years of experience in digital advertising, applying for a job at a healthcare company.”

Tailor to a specific job ad

Once you have created your resume, upload it as a document and paste the relevant job description, into the AI prompt, and add your own prompts such as:

“Match this resume to the job posting below.”

Continue to refine

Beyond these basics, you can then ask AI to refine the resume in terms of content and design. But ensure that you always check for grammar and authenticity before sending. It speeds up the process, but it’s essential that you feel your resume accurately reflects you, both in terms of content and tone.

Next create a cover letter using AI

If you’ve created a resume using AI, then it only makes sense that you also create a cover letter. And if you have already created a resume using AI, then the cover letter will feel like a simple and logical extension.

Pick your AI tool

ChatGPT is very good for creating cover letters, but if you’ve selected a specific tool to create your resume and feel confident with it, then use that. There are also other specific tools such as Kickresume and CoverDoc.ai.

Use key info

Now you have the information that was collated for your resume, you may want to expand on some of the areas that are particularly relevant to this job description.

Use prompts

If you now upload your resume as a document and add the job description to the prompts, you can add text such as: “Please write a cover letter for this job description, using my resume which has been uploaded, highlighting my experience with other software companies and their products.”

As with creating the resume, you can then go on to ask for particular tones such as formal or friendly or bold. But make sure you add your own touches to personalise and give authenticity.

But remember…

It’s still about you applying for a job, with the unique skills, experiences, and qualities you possess. To get the job, they’re going to want you for who and what you are. AI can speed up the process and add structure and eloquence, if they’re not your strong points, but keep it real. Don’t exaggerate and make sure your authenticity shines through.

You’re the one applying for the job – AI is just your personal assistant.
