Web Application Developer

Contract Opportunity for a Web Application Developer with Queensland Government

Your new company

We are a department of more than 8,800 employees across the state. Our vision is to create a single integrated network accessible to everyone.
Each year we have more than 3.6 million face-to-face interactions with Queenslanders and more than 6.7 million transactions using online service channels. We are responsible for around 80 percent of all government counter transactions. We are an exciting place to work, with an enormous scope of work incorporating 79 different occupational areas. Every day Queenslanders rely on the transport network to get them to work, to school, and to health care. As the most decentralised state in Australia, transport is a key driver of economic growth, and we are at the front line of planning, developing and maintaining the extensive network required to keep Queensland moving. We lead emerging technologies, so our transport network meets the needs of our customers now and into the future.

Your new role

Transport and Main Roads (TMR) is seeking an experienced Web Application Developer (Frontend / Geospatial Visualisation Specialist) to join the Transport Analysis Unit and contribute to a high‑impact analytics initiative. Working within a multidisciplinary project team, the role focusses on the design, development, and technical direction of a modern, high‑performance, map‑centric web application.
The successful candidate will collaborate closely with internal data science and modelling specialists to deliver an interactive, scenario‑driven analytics platform that supports both internal analysts and external stakeholders. The application will integrate and render large volumes of geospatial and time‑dependent data, requiring strong consideration of frontend performance, scalability, and maintainability.
This role applies modern frontend engineering practices and advanced geospatial web visualisation techniques to build a robust and intuitive user experience. While primarily frontend‑focused, the position requires effective collaboration with backend and infrastructure engineers, including alignment on data contracts and APIs delivered via FastAPI and deployed through containerised services on AWS.

What you'll need to succeed

To succeed in this role, you will bring strong front-end engineering expertise with a focus on data‑intensive and geospatial web applications. You will be highly proficient in React and TypeScript, with the ability to design scalable, maintainable frontend architectures for complex, map‑centric systems. Success also requires hands‑on experience delivering high‑performance geospatial visualisations, integrating reliably with backend APIs, and managing performance when rendering large datasets and time‑based scenarios.
You will thrive in this role by demonstrating technical leadership, strong collaboration with data science and backend teams, and a proactive mindset in an agile delivery environment. An emphasis on security, scalability, documentation, and continuous improvement, combined with curiosity for emerging frontend and mapping technologies, will be key to delivering a robust and extensible platform over the long term.

What you'll get in return

A senior leadership role with real influence over technical direction
A collaborative and inclusive team culture that values innovation and continuous learning
Flexible working arrangements and a competitive salary package
Career progression opportunities in a high-growth
