Senior Town Planner

Senior Town Planner | Drive sustainable growth in regional Victoria with flexible, community-focused work.

Your new company

This northern Victorian local government authority is known for its forward-thinking approach to planning, development, and community engagement. The organisation is deeply committed to creating a safe, inclusive, and supportive environment that values diversity, child safety, and employee wellbeing. Staff benefit from flexible working arrangements, internal development opportunities, health and wellness programmes, and a strong, collaborative team culture that promotes continuous improvement and meaningful work-life balance.

Your new role

As a Senior Town Planner, you will be a key player in shaping the physical and strategic growth of the region. Reporting to the Planning Coordinator, you’ll oversee complex planning applications, planning scheme amendments, and strategic initiatives that contribute to a thriving, sustainable municipality.

You will prepare planning reports, lead stakeholder consultation, and represent the organisation at VCAT, Planning Panels, and public forums. You’ll collaborate across council departments, work with government agencies, and support the delivery of integrated planning outcomes that reflect local policy and community vision.

The role includes coordination of subdivision approvals, site inspections, and enforcement of planning controls. You’ll also contribute to public-facing strategies that guide future land use, and may assist in emergency management when needed.

What you'll need to succeed

You’ll hold a degree in Urban and Regional Planning (or a related field), paired with at least five years’ experience in a senior planning role—ideally within local government. You’ll be well-versed in the Victorian Planning Scheme and statutory frameworks and be capable of analysing legislation and developing strategy and policy accordingly.

Your interpersonal and project management skills will be exceptional, allowing you to lead initiatives, communicate clearly across a variety of stakeholders, and balance strategic priorities. You’ll be confident in public settings, politically astute, and comfortable managing competing demands with professionalism and integrity.

What you'll get in return

This Band 7 position under the Victorian Local Authorities Award 2001 offers genuine career impact and the opportunity to shape development in a growing regional community.

You’ll enjoy flexible work options, access to wellbeing and professional development support, and a workplace culture that values inclusion, trust, and high-quality public service. You’ll also gain the satisfaction of knowing your work is directly improving the region’s liveability and long-term sustainability.
