Position Purpose
The government agency is seeking to engage a qualified technical resource to join its team for a critical Windows infrastructure project. This project involves supporting a legacy Windows virtual machine (VM) environment and its users, and migrating approximately 30 researchers to a new, modern environment. You will work in a Project Team that includes an Advanced Scientific Computing Manager and a Project Manager. You will provide advice about how best to address user requirements and will help establish all aspects of the new environment.
Role and responsibilities:
- Responsibility for day-to-day systems, network and storage administration. At times, the performance of these duties will be under limited supervision and in alignment with ICT requirements and Whole of Victorian Government (WoVG) frameworks, processes and standards.
- Troubleshooting, diagnosing and rectifying issues affecting performance, availability, integrity of infrastructure and data, through management of internal and user tickets.
- Working closely and collaboratively with a project team and scientists across a range of disciplines to specify, design and implement changes to hardware and software as required to adapt to evolving scientific projects.
- Specification, design and implementation of scripts or applications to grow system integrity through improved system administration and automation.
- Play a key role in the design, provision, documentation and support of the scientific computing infrastructure and solutions.
- Demonstrate ownership through the proactive identification, analysis and remediation of issues that prevent project outputs or business outcomes from being met.
- Approach work with a continuous improvement mindset, delivering incrementally and improving based on feedback; foster an environment of shared success within the team and a strong commitment to customer focus and excellent service delivery.
What you need to succeed - Must have a Bachelor's degree in computer science/engineering or related field or alternative relevant qualifications
- Core Windows Skills: Demonstrated experience in the administration of Windows Server (2016 and newer) and Windows Client (10 and newer).
- Active Directory: Detailed knowledge of Active Directory, including managing Domain Controllers, DNS, DHCP, and Group Policy design and implementation.
- System Management: Hands-on experience with user account administration (creation, modification, migration), system patching, and security auditing.
- Virtualisation: Extensive experience with the administration of virtualised desktop and server infrastructure.
- Driving licence (there may be a small, infrequent requirement for regional research farm site visits).
Desirable experience
- Automation: Experience in creating and maturing service delivery using automation tools and scripting languages, particularly PowerShell.
- Configuration Management: Experience using Infrastructure as Code (IaC) tools, specifically SaltStack or similar (e.g., Ansible).
- Security: Experience in the deployment and management of modern endpoint security (e.g., Defender for Endpoint, CrowdStrike).
- Hypervisor: Direct experience with XCP-NG.
- Environment: Previous experience working within a scientific, research, or life-sciences computing environment.
- Business Analysis: Takes responsibility for investigative work to understand the business requirements and suggest effective solutions
What you'll get in return - Initial contract until 10th September 2026 + potential extensions.
- $600–$650 + Super per day.
