Senior Legal Counsel (Coronial & Litigation)

Triple Zero Victoria | Melbourne | 12-month contract | Hybrid working

Your new company

Triple Zero Victoria (TZV) provides the critical link between the Victorian community and the State’s emergency services. Every day, their people support Ambulance Victoria, Fire Rescue Victoria, the Country Fire Authority, Victoria Police and VICSES – ensuring emergency help arrives when it’s needed most. Within this unique environment, the Legal Services team plays a central role in protecting TZV’s integrity and guiding its response to matters of the highest public importance.

They are now seeking a Senior Legal Counsel (Coronial & Litigation) on a 12-month FTC to lead TZV’s approach to coronial inquests and associated civil litigation. This is a senior appointment reporting directly to the Director, Legal Services – a role that will place you at the heart of sensitive, high-profile matters with significant community impact.

Your new role

• Lead and manage TZV’s involvement in matters before the Coroners Court of Victoria.
• Provide strategic, authoritative legal advice to the Director, Executive Leadership Team and operational leaders.
• Oversee coronial case preparation, evidence management and external representation, working closely with TZV’s insurers (VMIA) and external panel firms.
• Advise on related civil litigation and legal risk, ensuring robust compliance with statutory obligations.
• Shape organisational understanding of coronial outcomes, translating findings into practical reforms and preventative measures.
• Mentor and guide junior counsel, contributing to a culture of legal excellence and integrity.

What you'll need to succeed

They are seeking an experienced lawyer (7–12 years PAE) with demonstrated expertise in coronial inquests and civil litigation. You bring:

• A proven track record advising or appearing in coronial proceedings, ideally for government, regulators or institutional clients.
• Strong litigation and statutory interpretation skills, with the ability to manage complex, sensitive matters under public scrutiny.
• The gravitas to brief executives and external stakeholders confidently, and the judgement to balance legal, reputational and community considerations.
• Experience engaging with external insurers, regulators and counsel.
• A collaborative style that builds confidence across teams and drives trust in legal decision-making.

What you'll get in return

This is a rare opportunity to step into a leadership-facing coronial role in a mission-critical organisation. You will operate with a high degree of autonomy, advising at the most senior levels and influencing systemic change arising from coronial findings.
• Exposure to matters of genuine public interest and community significance.
• Opportunity to lead the coronial function and shape organisational strategy.
• Work within a collaborative, values-driven public sector environment.

For Senior Associates or Special Counsels seeking to broaden their impact beyond firm environments, or government lawyers looking for a high-profile secondment, this is a platform to demonstrate leadership, visibility and expertise.
