Your new role

As a Senior Criminal Lawyer based in Burnie, Tasmania, you will lead the legal practice in criminal law. This role encompasses complex legal work in the Magistrate Court, Supreme Court, and Court of Criminal Appeal. You will also manage and mentor junior lawyers and administrative staff. Your responsibilities include:

  • Leading the delivery of legal services, including routine and complex litigation.
  • Providing professional supervision and mentoring to junior lawyers.
  • Managing administrative staff to ensure high-quality service delivery.
  • Enhancing collaborative relationships with external organisations and representing the organisation on committees.
  • Developing policies and contributing to law reform initiatives.
  • Maintaining up-to-date legal knowledge and participating in continuous education.
  • Participating in an on-call roster for urgent legal assistance.

What you'll need to succeed

This role requires a legal practitioner licenced in Tasmania with at least 5 years of criminal practice experience, including substantial court appearance work. The ideal candidate will demonstrate:

  • Strong experience in managing complex legal cases and mentoring staff.
  • Deep understanding and respect for the cultural needs of communities.
  • Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills, able to handle complex legal information sensitively.
  • High initiative, resourcefulness, and excellent stakeholder management skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively within a team and foster a positive work environment.
