This contract position sits within a council environment where procurement plays a critical role in delivering community and operational outcomes. You’ll take ownership of the procurement function, working collaboratively across the organisation to ensure compliance, drive efficiencies and support continuous improvement.
Leading a small team, you’ll coordinate a centralised and strategic approach to procurement while influencing best practice across all business units.
Your new role
As Procurement Contractor, you will act as the organisation’s procurement expert and leader. In this role you will:
- Implement and uphold Council’s Procurement Policy to ensure full legislative compliance
- Lead and manage the procurement function, driving a coordinated approach to identify efficiencies and cost savings.
- Oversee the preparation, issuing and evaluation of tenders, quotes and EOIs, including supporting contract negotiations to achieve value-for-money outcomes.
- Develop, implement and review probity plans to ensure transparent and compliant procurement processes
- Maintain and enhance contract management frameworks aligned with best practice service delivery standards
- Build strong relationships with suppliers, including engaging local businesses to promote participation in procurement opportunities
- Establish and oversee procurement audit functions to monitor risk, compliance and governance, providing regular reporting to management
- Represent Council on the Far North Queensland Regional Organisation of Councils’ Procurement Committee
- Manage and oversee the Contract Register, ensuring all statutory and audit requirements are met
- Prepare and deliver high-quality reports for Council and executive stakeholders
- Promote strong recordkeeping practices aligned with corporate systems and policies
- Provide leadership, support and direction to procurement staff while fostering a high-performing team environment
- Drive continuous improvement across procurement processes, systems and supplier arrangements
This is a highly visible leadership role, ideal for a hands-on procurement professional who enjoys influencing strategy while remaining operationally involved.
What you'll need to succeed
You’ll bring strong procurement leadership experience within a compliance-driven environment, ideally in Local Government or a similarly regulated setting. Key strengths include:
- Demonstrated experience leading procurement and contract management functions
- Strong knowledge of the Local Government Act 2009 and relevant procurement legislation
- Proven experience managing tenders, contracts and evaluation processes
- Experience in a Team Leader or supervisory capacity
- Ability to engage effectively with stakeholders, including suppliers, staff and working groups
- Strong reporting and presentation skills
- Sound commercial acumen with a focus on efficiency and continuous improvement
- High level organisational skills and attention to detail, particularly in governance and recordkeeping
- Relevant tertiary qualifications and/or significant procurement experience
