These range from major bus and ferry operations, disaster preparedness, response and recovery, parks, natural environment, roads and transport, arts and culture, sports and recreation and compliance and regulatory enforcement.
Your new role
  • We are seeking a skilled and curious Data Analyst to support the Council’s growing data capability. The organisation has recently established a centralised data lake and data warehouse environment, where data from multiple systems is ingested nightly.
  • This role will focus on interrogating the data lake using SQL, ensuring accurate extraction of information, and enabling meaningful analysis and reporting. You will work closely with stakeholders to understand evolving requirements and help shape how data is used to inform business decisions.
  • This is an exploratory and evolving role, particularly in the early stages, where trial-and-error, curiosity, and adaptability will be key to success.
  • As this role will evolve over time as the organisation continues to better understand the capabilities of its data platform. The successful candidate should be comfortable working in a dynamic environment where requirements may shift and expand.
  • Develop, write, and optimise SQL queries to extract data from the data lake and warehouse
  • Validate and ensure accuracy of data extracted for reporting and analysis
  • Explore and interrogate data sources to identify relevant datasets and insights
  • Support the delivery of data insights to inform business and operational decision-making
  • Translate complex data findings into clear, actionable insights for stakeholders
  • Enable and support the creation of dashboards and reports (Power BI) through structured data outputs
  • Collaborate with stakeholders to refine requirements as data capabilities evolve
  • Continuously improve query performance and data extraction processes
What you'll need to succeed
Required Skills:
  • Strong SQL expertise, including writing, optimising, and troubleshooting complex queries
  • Proven experience working with large datasets, data lakes, or data warehouse environments
  • Experience analysing data and translating findings into meaningful business insights
  • Ability to validate and ensure data accuracy and integrity
  • Experience surfacing data into reporting tools (e.g. Power BI)
Desirable Skills
  • Experience with SAP data or environments
  • Experience with reporting/analytics tools (e.g. Power BI, Tableau, or similar)
  • Exposure to data modelling or data architecture concepts
