Dam Engineer

Your new role

As the responsible dam engineer you will be accountable for the assurance of the integrity of the water and tailings storage facilities through engineering governance to manage the risk of dam failure. Key accountabilities are as follows:

  • Dam operation, maintenance and surveillance.
  • Dam emergency preparedness and response.
  • Dam instrumentation and monitoring.
  • Ownership and verification of critical controls for dam failure.
  • Governance of dam remedial designs and construction projects.
  • Stakeholder engagement and support.
  • Risk assessment, compliance and governance.
  • Adherence to BMA standards and systems.
  • Applying state, national and global guidelines / standards for tailings.
  • Integrating GISTM requirements to site operations.
  • Active participation and support for internal and external audits and reviews.
  • Supporting BMA RDEs at other sites within the Bowen Basin, as required


What you'll need to succeed

To be successful in this role, you will possess the following:

  • Tertiary qualifications in engineering or equivalent subjects and industry experience, preferably in the fields of civil, water or geotechnical engineering.
  • Direct experience in tailings and water storage facilities during design, construction, operation, and maintenance.
  • Strong capability in engineering principles, standards, and processes.
  • Demonstrated experience with defining project scope, working across a range of disciplines, and navigating organisational complexity.
  • Highly organised and adaptable to manage conflicting priorities in a dynamic environment.
  • Strong stakeholder and communication skills, with the ability to translate technical information to operations and influence at various levels within the organisation.

What you'll get in return

You will be working in the Bowen Basin region, Central Queensland with FIFO/DIDO options available. The roster is Monday to Friday with usually four days on site and one day at your home location. Hays will pay you on a weekly basis, and you will be paid an attractive hourly rate & super. Our position is commencing ASAP until June 2026 for the right candidate.
