A major Australian organisation is expanding its cyber security function and is seeking an experienced Senior Data Protection Engineer to join its Security Operations team. This is a newly established position offering the opportunity to own and uplift data protection capabilities across a modern Microsoft-centric environment.

Your new role

You will act as the dedicated Data Protection Engineer within a specialised security operations structure. Your focus will be maintaining and enhancing data security controls, ensuring sensitive information remains protected, and representing the data protection function in cross‑functional discussions.

• Manage and enhance data protection controls across the Microsoft security ecosystem
• Oversee and optimise Microsoft Purview including DLP, auto-labelling, and IRM
• Support and improve integrations with tools such as Skyhigh (CASB), Microsoft Defender suite (EDR, Cloud Apps), and FireEye
• Administer Azure security components including conditional access, NSGs, UDRs
• Provide hands-on expertise with Azure Application Gateway (WAF)
• Drive continuous improvement within the data protection tower
• Collaborate with stakeholders across technology and business units
• Represent security operations in governance, incident, and project meetings

What you'll need to succeed

• Senior-level experience as a Data Protection or Cyber Security Engineer
• Strong exposure to Microsoft enterprise security technologies
• Hands-on Azure security engineering capabilities
• Prior experience maintaining and uplifting DLP, CASB and EDR solutions
• Excellent communication skills and confidence operating as a sole specialist
• Ability to balance operational duties with enhancement initiatives
