Chief Legal Officer

A rare leadership opportunity with the Northern Land Council

Salary Package: $207,000 inc. of 15% superannuation (Negotiable depending on experience)

Hays Recruitment is proud to represent the Northern Land Council in appointing a pivotal leadership role granting you the opportunity to lead legal strategy where it truly matters.

This is a rare opportunity to work at the intersection of law, leadership and purpose;driving outcomes that directly shape Aboriginal land, sea and resource rights across the Northern Territory.
As Chief Legal Officer, you will be a trusted executive partner, an influential leader and the principal legal authority within the Northern Land Council (NLC). Your work will have a lasting impact, supporting Traditional Owners and strengthening self-determination through legally sound, culturally grounded decision-making.

About the role
The Chief Legal Officer provides enterprise‑level legal leadership and strategic advice to the CEO, Chair and Executive Council. This is not a traditional in-house counsel position; it is a senior executive role with broad influence across the organisation.
You will lead and mentor a high‑performing legal function, oversee complex and sensitive matters, guide strategic litigation, and ensure the quality, integrity and direction of legal services across multiple practice areas. Central to the role is enabling decision-making that is both legally robust and culturally legitimate in support of Traditional Owners.

What you will bring
You are an accomplished strategic legal leader with the judgement, credibility and presence to operate effectively at executive level. You are comfortable navigating complex, high‑stakes environments and leading multidisciplinary teams through ambiguity and competing priorities.
You bring strong experience in statutory, governance or highly regulated environments, alongside a clear ability to translate legal complexity into practical, executive‑level advice. You understand that technical expertise alone is not enough—success in this role requires leadership capability, cultural awareness and sound professional judgement.
You will also demonstrate:
  • Extensive senior leadership experience within a legal practice or complex organisation, including leading high‑performing teams
  • Proven experience advising CEOs, boards or executive councils on complex, high‑risk legal and governance matters
  • Strong capability in statutory interpretation, regulatory frameworks and enterprise‑wide legal risk management
  • Demonstrated ability to work respectfully and effectively in culturally diverse environments, including engagement with Aboriginal stakeholders

What’s in it for you?
At the Northern Land Council, you will step into a role with genuine influence, scale and purpose.
You will shape legal strategy at an enterprise level while working on nationally significant land, native title and resource matters. This is an opportunity to lead a multidisciplinary legal function and contribute to outcomes that deliver long‑term community and intergenerational impact.
  • A competitive executive‑level salary package
  • Salary sacrificing up to $15,900 plus additional meal and entertainment benefits
  • Five weeks annual leave, leave loading and 18 days personal leave
  • Paid Christmas shutdown
  • A values‑driven, high‑impact leadership environment

The Northern Land Council (NLC) is an independent statutory authority of the Commonwealth, established under the Aboriginal Land Rights (Northern Territory) Act 1976. The NLC exists to serve Traditional Owners and Aboriginal people across its region.
