Chief Financial Officer

Join the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra as their CFO on either a full time or 08/0.9 basis.

Your new company

The Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra has been inspiring, invigorating, and entertaining audiences for over 75 years, forming part of the cultural fabric of Tasmania. Based in Hobart’s CBD, the TSO employs over 90 Tasmanians – as well as the world’s finest national and international artists and conductors, and is recognised nationally and internationally for its distinctive artistic identity. With a strong commitment to connection, artistry and integrity, the TSO offers a collaborative, values driven environment where people are empowered to contribute meaningfully to the organisation’s success and community impact.

Your new role

Reporting directly to the CEO, the Chief Financial Officer (CFO) is a key member of the Executive Leadership Team, responsible for financial stewardship, governance, and broader business services across the organisation. Operating within a lean structure, this is a genuinely hands on role combining strategic leadership with day-to-day operational involvement. Key responsibilities include:

  • Leading financial management, including budgeting, forecasting, cashflow and long term planning
  • Providing reporting and analysis to support Executive and Board decision making
  • Overseeing audit, financial controls, compliance and external relationships
  • Acting as Company Secretary, supporting Board and Committee governance processes
  • Leading a small finance team while remaining involved in operational activities as required
  • Overseeing business services including IT, cybersecurity, procurement, insurance and assets
  • Supporting commercial decision making and contributing to organisational strategy as part of the Executive Leadership Team

This role offers the opportunity to contribute across the organisation, balancing strategic influence with practical delivery.

What you'll need to succeed

You will be a commercially astute and values driven finance leader, comfortable operating at both a strategic and hands on level within a lean environment. CA or CPA qualified, you will bring experience across financial leadership, including budgeting, reporting, audit and risk, along with exposure to operational finance and Board governance. You will combine strong commercial judgement with a practical, solutions focused approach, the ability to lead a small team, and clear communication skills, with exposure to business systems or broader corporate services and experience in the arts, not for profit or government sectors viewed favourably.

What you'll get in return

This is a rare opportunity to join a respected Tasmanian organisation in a role that offers both impact and flexibility. You will operate at an executive level with genuine influence across the organisation while enjoying the breadth that comes with a hands on remit. The role offers flexible working arrangements, including the option to work at 0.8 or 0.9, along with a central Hobart location and a collaborative, values driven culture. You will have a high degree of autonomy and the opportunity to contribute to a meaningful organisation that plays a significant role in Tasmania’s cultural landscape. TSO delivers over 100 live performances a year across the island, enables over 10,000 children to experience their orchestra annually, leads Australia’s national elite training programs for conducting and composition, and is Australia’s most broadcast, streamed, and recorded orchestra.
