CEO

Spearhead community-controlled development to make a lasting impact for North East Arnhem Land.

Your new company

Lead a Yolŋu-driven agenda. Build trusted partnerships. Help shape a strong and self-determined future for North East Arnhem Land. Dilak Council Ltd is a formal decision-making body advancing the self-determination, wellbeing and empowerment of Yolŋu across North East Arnhem Land. Governed by an elected Board drawn from the leaders of 13 regional clans, Dilak Council provides trusted backbone support across community, regional and economic development priorities. The Dilak Council are seeking an inaugural Chief Executive Officer to lead the organisation through its next phase of growth and impact.

Your new role

This is a rare and meaningful executive leadership opportunity for a values-led and community-minded CEO who can work with deep respect for Yolngu leadership, language, culture and clan authority. Reporting directly to the Board, the CEO will translate the Dilak Council’s regional vision and strategic priorities into operational reality. The role requires a leader who can work credibly across community, government, funders and partners, while remaining accountable to the people and communities Dilak Council exists to serve. Based in Gove (NT), the CEO will lead a small multidisciplinary team and play a central role in shaping strategy, strengthening governance, building partnerships, securing resources and establishing the systems and infrastructure needed to support long-term organisational success.

Key responsibilities
In this role, you will:
  • lead the delivery of Dilak Council’s strategic and regional agenda in partnership with the Board
  • support strong governance, board reporting and policy development
  • build productive relationships with community leaders, Elders, Traditional Owners, government, funders and sector partners
  • drive advocacy and influence policy and systems change aligned to Dilak Council’s priorities
  • oversee budgets, financial reporting, grant acquittals, risk and compliance
  • lead and support a high-performing, culturally safe and values-driven team
  • establish and strengthen the organisation’s systems, workforce and operational infrastructure.

What you'll need to succeed

You will be an accomplished senior executive or CEO with the ability to lead in complex, culturally grounded and community-connected environments.
To be successful, you will bring:
  • proven senior leadership experience in an Aboriginal community-controlled organisation, or a comparable remote, regional or community development context.
  • experience working with a Board and supporting high standards of governance and accountability.
  • strong stakeholder engagement skills, with the ability to build trust across community, government, funders and external partners.
  • demonstrated financial, operational, risk and compliance capability.
  • experience leading teams, projects and organisational development.
  • highly developed communication skills and the ability to navigate complex political and cultural environments.
  • a deep commitment to culturally safe practice, self-determination and community-controlled governance.

Experience in a very remote setting, established networks across the Aboriginal community-controlled sector, and understanding of Yolŋu culture, language or dialect will be highly regarded. Yolŋu and Aboriginal applicants, and those with strong community connections to North East Arnhem Land, are strongly encouraged to apply.
