Assistant Accountant

Townsville Graduate Accountant opportunity with real hands‑on experience and mentoring.
Your new company

This well‑established, privately owned Australian business is based in Townsville and operates across multiple sites in North Queensland and Brisbane, with core operations supporting large‑scale rail and infrastructure projects. With a complex group structure and in‑house statutory reporting, the organisation offers a professional yet down‑to‑earth environment where finance plays a central role in supporting the wider business.

The Finance team also supports administration and payroll functions, providing a varied and commercially focused accounting environment. The business is audited annually and is currently implementing new systems and processes, offering excellent exposure for an early‑career accountant.

Your new role

An opportunity has arisen for a motivated Graduate or Junior Assistant Accountant to join the Finance team in Townsville, supporting the Group Accountant and broader team. This role is ideal for someone who has recently graduated or is close to completing their accounting qualification and is keen to build strong practical foundations.

You will step into a role with real responsibility, hands‑on learning, and the autonomy to grow, with guidance rather than micromanagement. Importantly, there is a planned handover period with the outgoing Assistant Accountant, allowing for structured training and support.

Key responsibilities will include:

  • Assisting with monthly management accounts
  • Preparing weekly cash flow reporting
  • Performing balance sheet reconciliations and maintaining internal controls
  • Supporting in‑house statutory and audit requirements
  • Ad hoc project work (e.g. implementation of new accounting standards, system improvements)
  • Assisting with transactional accounting, reporting, and process improvement initiatives
The role will continue to evolve as the business implements new ERP systems and reporting processes.

What you'll need to succeed

  • An accounting degree completed or near completion (TAFE qualifications will be considered with relevant experience)
  • Interest or experience in graduate or assistant accounting roles
  • Strong attitude, curiosity, and willingness to learn
  • Ability to work autonomously with guidance and mentoring
  • Eligibility to work in Australia
Cultural fit, adaptability, and long‑term interest in the role are valued more highly than years of experience.

What you'll get in return

  • Salary range of $65,000 – $75,000 + super (depending on skills and experience)
  • Formal performance and remuneration review after 6 months
  • Structured handover and training from the outgoing Assistant Accountant
  • Exposure to a complex group structure and commercial accounting environment
  • Genuine career development and mentoring from an experienced Group Accountant / CFO
  • Flexible working hours, including 6-hour Fridays
  • A supportive team that values growth, initiative, and culture
