WHS role supporting major capital works projects in Canberra

This organisation is a federal government cultural national institution based in Canberra. They are planning significant capital works and construction-related activities, offering the opportunity to work across large-scale projects in a complex and high-risk environment.


Your new role

This is a 12 month non-ongoing opportunity with potential for extension.

As the Senior WHS Advisor, you will provide specialist WHS advice and support across capital works, construction and operational activities. You will work closely with internal teams and contractors to ensure WHS risks are effectively managed across the full project lifecycle.

Key responsibilities include:
  • Providing WHS advice during project planning and design, including early risk identification and safe design principles
  • Partnering with Capital Works, Facilities and operational teams to manage WHS risks across construction, installations and day-to-day operations
  • Reviewing contractor documentation, including SWMS, risk assessments and high-risk work activities
  • Conducting site inspections, audits and monitoring contractor performance to ensure compliance with WHS frameworks and legislation
  • Supporting contractor and staff inductions, and overseeing WHS practices during construction activities
  • Leading or supporting incident investigations and implementing corrective actions to prevent recurrence
  • Promoting a strong safety culture through engagement, training and mentoring staff and contractors
  • Contributing to the ongoing improvement of WHS systems, processes and reporting, including the use of safety data to inform decision-making

What you'll need to succeed

You will be an experienced WHS professional with a strong background in managing construction or high-risk operational environments. You will be confident working across complex settings and applying a practical, risk-based approach to safety.
You will demonstrate:

  • Proven experience applying WHS frameworks in construction, infrastructure or similar high-risk environments

  • Strong understanding of contractor management, including reviewing safety documentation and monitoring performance

  • Experience conducting audits, site inspections and incident investigations

  • The ability to provide clear, practical advice and influence stakeholders at all levels

  • Strong communication and relationship management skills, with the ability to engage across diverse teams

  • The ability to manage competing priorities and work across multiple projects and operational areas

  • A minimum Certificate IV in WHS is required, with higher qualifications highly regarded.

  • This role is only open to Australian citizens.
