The Kong API Developer is responsible for designing, developing, deploying, and managing APIs using the Kong API Gateway. This role involves building scalable API solutions, implementing plugins, integrating microservices, and ensuring performance, security, and reliability of the API ecosystem.

What you'll need to succeed

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field.
  • 6+ years of experience in API development or backend engineering.
  • Hands‑on experience with Kong API Gateway (OSS/Enterprise).
  • Strong knowledge of RESTful APIs, API lifecycle, and microservices architecture.
  • Experience in Lua scripting (for plugin development) or knowledge of Python/Node.js/Java/Go.
  • Understanding of API security frameworks:
  • OAuth 2.0
  • JWT
  • mTLS
  • RBAC
  • Experience with container technologies: Docker, Kubernetes (K8s).
  • Proficiency with version control systems (Git) and CI/CD tools.
  • Strong debugging and performance optimization skills.

What you'll get in return

  • Design, develop, and implement APIs and microservices using the Kong API Gateway (OSS or Enterprise).
  • Configure and manage Kong Gateway, including routes, services, upstreams, plugins, and consumers.
  • Develop custom plugins in Lua or other supported languages when required.
  • Integrate APIs with backend services including databases, cloud services, authentication systems, and internal applications.
  • Implement API security standards, including OAuth2, JWT, mTLS, rate limiting, and API key management.
  • Optimize API performance, load balancing strategies, and request/response transformations.
  • Configure CI/CD pipelines for API deployment using tools such as GitHub Actions, Jenkins, Azure DevOps, or GitLab.
  • Monitor and troubleshoot API traffic using Kong Manager, Konga, or observability tools (Prometheus, Grafana, ELK).
  • Collaborate with backend engineers, architects, DevOps, and product teams to deliver scalable and secure API solutions.
  • Maintain documentation for API specifications, integration guides, and gateway configurations.
