Your new role
The EL1 Actuary (Professional Stream) is accountable under broad direction to undertake very complex work that delivers quality outcomes across key organisational functions.
The position is an important team leadership role and will have delegated authority and responsibility to resolve issues and risks across wide‑ranging activities of substantial depth involving significant detail. The role requires providing leadership, control, planning, resource management, performance management, and decision‑making for team members and assigned contractors within the work area.
The EL1 Actuary (Professional Stream) will exercise a considerable degree of independence to engage in very complex problem-solving and issues management within Scheme Effectiveness and Forecasting. The position requires sound decision‑making and judgement to produce high‑level policy advice and operational support.
The position is required to coordinate and assume responsibility for detailed or sensitive projects that may include performing varied activities involving multiple different and unrelated processes or methods that may impact strategic or operational outcomes.
The EL1 Actuary (Professional Stream) is responsible for actively managing key internal and external stakeholder relationships and, where required, will represent and negotiate on behalf of the organisation across a range of forums.
Key duties and responsibilities
• Providing statistical and actuarial advice.
• Providing oversight and management of reporting, analysis and data management activities as required, including regular performance monitoring.
• Designing actuarial, statistical, and mathematical models to undertake analytical work that respond to business issues, including actuarial monitoring and analyses, data tabulations, scheme projects and cost benefit analyses.
• Undertaking ad hoc modelling requests and report production.
• Presenting the outcomes of work undertaken, tailored to context via verbal and written communication.
What you'll need to succeed
1. Proficiency in R or Python, with a preference for R, including:
• Clean/transform/summarise large data sets (e.g. data.table, dplyr)
• Functional programming practices Train/evaluate/infer machine learning models (e.g. xgboost)
2. Proficiency in SQL
3. Some experience with version control systems, i.e. git
4. Experience building statistical or machine learning models
5. This position is within the professional job stream and the officer must possess relevant academic qualifications, including tertiary qualifications in Actuarial Studies or Mathematics/Statistics, with significant progress towards Associate and/or Fellowship qualifications. Only candidates with FIAA qualifications and 7 to 15 years' experience will be considered.
