We are seeking APS5 Community & Peer Workers to join a specialised APS mental health service supporting veterans, current serving ADF members, and their families. Your new role
As a Community & Peer Worker, you will draw on your lived experience of military service or military family life, to support clients in their recovery. Working alongside clinicians and peer professionals, you will provide assistance that empowers individuals to set goals, build resilience and engage confidently with their communities.
Your responsibilities will include:
- Personalised Peer Support: Deliver recovery oriented support for veterans, current serving members and families, including identifying needs and developing individual Action Plans.
- Client Engagement: Use lived experience to build trust, promote hope and provide education around recovery and trauma informed mental health support.
- Group Work: Facilitate or co facilitate group programs in partnership with clinicians or external providers.
- Stakeholder Engagement: Promote the service within the veteran community, building networks with ADF organisations, ex‑service groups, and community services.
- Multidisciplinary Collaboration: Participate in case reviews, work closely with clinical teams and contribute to integrated service delivery.
- Documentation & Reporting: Maintain accurate, timely records in line with policy, privacy, and confidentiality requirements.
- Professional Development: Engage in mandatory supervision, peer networks and ongoing training to ensure safe, high quality practice.
What you'll need to succeed
To excel in this role, you will bring:
- Mandatory lived experience of military service, military family life, or supporting someone through a mental health journey.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to engage respectfully and empathetically.
- High levels of integrity, professionalism and emotional intelligence.
- The ability to work collaboratively within a clinical, multidisciplinary environment.
- Understanding of strengths‑based, recovery‑focused and trauma‑informed approaches.
- Willingness to undertake further Lived Experience training (e.g., Certificate IV in Mental Health Peer Work) if not already completed.
Highly desirable:
- Certificate IV in Mental Health Peer Work or similar.
- Experience in mental health, coaching, mentoring or peer support roles.
Pre‑Employment Requirements
- Australian Citizenship (APS requirement).
- Ability to obtain and maintain a Baseline AGSVA clearance.
- Working with Children/Vulnerable People Check prior to commencement.
- Participation in external professional supervision and ongoing training.
