Your new role
Seeking a Landscape Architect for a short-term 2–3-month contract position, to be based remotely (Sydney or Newcastle) and travel when required. As a Landscape Architect, you will design high-quality concept plans for public spaces, parks, and landscapes across the council area.
This Landscape Architect role will support the delivery of Council’s Dogs in Open Space Action Plan and Dogs in Open Space Strategy 2023–2033, developing concept plans for fenced off-leash dog parks with a strong focus on safety, usability, environmental compliance, and respect for the site’s natural character.
Key Duties and Responsibilities
Design and deliver concept plans for public spaces, parks, and landscape projects, including fenced off-leash dog parks.
Prepare scaled layout diagrams, 3D perspectives or visualisations, materials and finishes schedules, and preliminary cost estimates.
Integrate designs with existing topography and minimise impact on native vegetation.
Ensure compliance with environmental and planning requirements, including REF (Review of Environmental Factors).
Incorporate practical maintenance considerations and use durable, low-maintenance materials.
Address site-specific constraints such as high pedestrian and vehicle activity, proximity to cliff edges, and natural amenity considerations.
Collaborate with internal teams and stakeholders to ensure concept plans meet project objectives and community needs.
Provide specialist advice on landscape design principles and best practices.
Research and incorporate sustainable and innovative design solutions.
Ensure all concept plans comply with relevant policies, codes, and standards.
What you'll need to succeed
Bachelor Degree in Landscape Architecture or a related field, OR demonstrated experience in landscape concept design.
Demonstrated experience in designing concept plans for public spaces or landscapes, including dog parks (ideal).
Creativity, attention to detail, and a passion for landscape design.
Strong communication and presentation skills.
Ability to communicate design ideas clearly and effectively to a range of audiences.
Understanding of sustainable design principles and relevant statutory requirements.
Ability to work collaboratively and professionally within a team environment.
