Temporary Chief Financial Officer role with a large State Government Department based near Perths CBD

We are seeking a strategic and experienced Chief Financial Officer to lead the Financial Services Division. This executive role is pivotal in shaping the department’s financial strategy, ensuring fiscal sustainability, and supporting the delivery of key public services.
As CFO, you will report directly to the Assistant Director General – Business and Corporate Services and work closely with the Corporate Executive to provide expert financial advice and leadership.

This role is a 3-month temporary contract but has the potential to go longer.

Your new role

  • Lead the department’s financial planning, budgeting, and reporting functions.
  • Oversee financial operations, accounting, procurement, and contract management.
  • Ensure compliance with the Financial Management Act 2006 and other relevant legislation.
  • Provide strategic advice on funding, treasury, and financial risk management.
  • Drive continuous improvement in financial systems, processes, and controls.
  • Represent the department in high-level forums, including board and committee meetings.
  • Manage and mentor a high-performing finance team.
  • Contribute to cross-agency collaboration and whole-of-government financial initiatives.

What you'll need to succeed

  • Proven executive leadership experience in finance, preferably within the public sector.
  • Tertiary qualifications in Finance, Commerce, Accounting, or a related field.
  • Membership of CPA Australia, CA ANZ, or an equivalent professional body.
  • Demonstrated expertise in strategic financial planning, budget management, and financial governance.
  • Strong stakeholder engagement and communication skills.
  • Ability to lead change, drive innovation, and foster a culture of accountability.
  • Knowledge of public sector financial frameworks and reporting standards.
