Hays is proud to partner with a leading government agency to recruit a highly skilled Senior Dam Engineer for a pivotal role in mine site regulation and rehabilitation across Victoria.

This is a rare opportunity to join a technically diverse team of subject-matter experts working on some of the state’s most critical tailings and slimes dam infrastructure. If you’re passionate about dam safety, environmental protection, and regulatory excellence, this role offers both challenge and impact .

Your new role
As a Senior Dam Engineer, you will be responsible for the below:

  • Lead technical reviews of tailings and slimes dam designs, operations, and closure plans.
  • Provide authoritative technical advice aligned with ANCOLD guidelines and regulatory standards.
  • Conduct site audits and inspections in collaboration with compliance teams.
  • Support risk assessments and recovery strategies for dam failure scenarios.
  • Collaborate with geotechnical, hydrological, and mining engineering professionals.
  • Prepare high-quality technical reports and regulatory advice for internal and external stakeholders.

What you'll need to succeed
You are a qualified and experienced engineer with a strong background in dam design and tailings storage facilities. You bring Essential:

  • A degree in Civil, Structural, Geotechnical, or Mining Engineering.
  • Demonstrated experience in tailings dam design and construction (not limited to earth or concrete dams).
  • Strong understanding of ANCOLD guidelines and risk management frameworks.
  • Excellent communication and technical writing skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively across multidisciplinary teams.
  • A valid Victorian Driver’s Licence and willingness to travel to remote sites (1–2 times per week).
  • Must be eligible for Engineers Australia membership or equivalent.
