Principal Strategic Planner

Drive visionary change and shape long-term growth in one of Victoria’s diverse and progressive urban areas.

Your new company

This inner bayside council, widely recognised for its forward-thinking approach to sustainability, community development, and heritage preservation, offers the opportunity to work in a team that values innovation, collaboration, and meaningful contribution. Nestled within one of Melbourne’s most vibrant municipalities, the organisation plays a key role in shaping a city that balances growth with liveability. The planning team is small, cohesive, and outcome-focused—bringing together experienced professionals in a supportive and flexible environment that values well-being, professional development, and inclusivity.

Your new role

As Principal Strategic Planner, you'll lead the way in delivering complex and high-impact strategic planning initiatives, while mentoring junior planners and advising the broader team. You’ll take ownership of planning scheme amendments and policy development to ensure alignment with legislative frameworks such as the Planning & Environment Act 1987 and the Victoria Planning Provisions. From managing high-profile projects and preparing reports for Council and independent panels, to facilitating meaningful community engagement, your role will blend analytical thinking with creative urban design. This is a leadership position where your capacity to work autonomously while inspiring others will help shape land use and future development across a dynamic municipality. This is a 12-week temporary assignment.

What you'll need to succeed

You’ll be a confident and capable planner, with a tertiary qualification in town planning or a related discipline, and extensive experience in local or state government strategic planning environments. Your strengths will include project management, high-level written and verbal communication, and the ability to analyse and resolve complex planning challenges. Experience in managing planning scheme amendments, strategic policy development, consultation processes, and a sound understanding of statutory obligations are essential. Bonus points if you bring specialist knowledge in heritage, economic development, or urban design. Above all, your collaborative spirit and ability to build lasting relationships with internal and external stakeholders will set you apart.

What you'll get in return

In addition to the opportunity to influence major planning outcomes that impact the community, you’ll join an organisation that offers flexibility and a commitment to work-life balance. Employees enjoy supportive leadership, professional development programs, generous leave provisions, and involvement in meaningful, community-centric work. If you’re seeking a role where your expertise will be valued, your ideas welcomed, and your efforts recognised—this is the strategic planning challenge you’ve been waiting for.
