An esteemed independent statutory office, established under the ICAC Act 2017, is seeking a Senior Legal Officer. The Office of the Independent Commissioner Against Corruption (OICAC) is dedicated to upholding integrity within the public administration of the Northern Territory. By preventing, detecting, investigating, and responding to improper conduct, they ensure the highest standards of public service. Operating within the OICAC, this pivotal role reports directly to the ICAC General Counsel and plays a key role in supporting their mission.

Your new role

As a Senior Legal Officer, you will be entrusted with delivering high-quality, expert legal advice and representation, especially in complex matters, to aid the Independent Commissioner Against Corruption (ICAC) in fulfilling statutory functions. Your responsibilities will encompass:

  • Delivering independent, expert legal advice and representation on complex issues to the ICAC, Assistant ICAC, and OICAC staff, ensuring the highest standards of legal support.
  • Providing strategic legal advice on investigations, including power exercises, warrant applications, evidence management, and legislative compliance, to guide ICAC's decision-making and actions.
  • Representing ICAC in courts and tribunals, showcasing your advocacy skills and commitment to justice.
  • Assisting in managing complex investigations, ensuring thoroughness and compliance with legal standards.
  • Acting as counsel assisting the ICAC or Assistant ICAC in examinations under the ICAC Act, contributing to the integrity and transparency of investigations.
  • Offering innovative, practical, and contemporary legal advice to support all aspects of OICAC's activities, enhancing its operational efficiency and effectiveness.
  • Participating in strategic planning, policy decision-making, and efficiency improvement projects, ensuring ICAC's activities are supported by robust legal frameworks.

What you'll need to succeed

To thrive in this critical position, you will require:
  • A law degree or equivalent, with admission or eligibility for admission as a legal practitioner in the Northern Territory.
  • Significant expertise in providing legal advice in law enforcement environments or complex investigation contexts, demonstrating your ability to navigate and advise on statutory powers.
  • Demonstrated experience in advocacy, with a proven track record of representing organisations in courts and tribunals.
  • A high-level capacity to simplify complex legal concepts into clear, actionable advice, and to effectively communicate complex issues in both written and verbal formats.
Desirable:
  • Experience in providing legal advice within a law enforcement agency or investigative agency context.
  • A detailed understanding of the criminal justice system and/or public law in Australia or another common law country.
