Frequently Asked Questions

How much will I get paid?
As much as possible! Seriously, you are our customers as much as the clients are, it is in all of our interests to make sure you are paid a fair and equitable market rate. The factors we take into account are the complexities of the job, your expertise, length of assignment, travel distance and how much support you are likely to receive. Sometimes these factors change mid assignment, so please let us know when this is the case. We are happy to look at rate increases if they are justified and deserved.

Your hourly rate is highly confidential (a condition of your employment) - as such you should only discuss it with your consultant.

What if I am sick?
Call your consultant by 8am so that they can inform the client and find a replacement if necessary. Sick leave is not paid for separately, as there is already an element included in your hourly rate.

Can I get time off?
We would not expect you to need time off in short-term assignments (ie less than a week or two). If you are attending interviews for permanent jobs, they should be made outside of normal business hours where possible. Otherwise, always check with your consultant first (not the client) no matter how little time off is needed so that we can liaise with the client.

What if I miss the timesheet deadline?
Call your consultant immediately! No guarantees though - no timesheet no pay!

What should I do if I have any OHS concerns/identify a possible health hazard/injure myself whilst working at a client?
Talk to your supervisor or the client OHS rep, and call your consultant as soon as possible! Your consultant will advise you on the best course of action to take depending on the circumstances.

How do I obtain information about OHS policies and procedures?
Email your request to ohs@hays.com.au

What if I don't like the assignment / company / colleagues / location etc?

Call your consultant. They are by far your best option to sort any problems out effectively and objectively - no matter how trivial it may seem, talk to your consultant first.

Do I have to wear a suit every time?
If in doubt, yes! Your consultant should tell you what the environment is like before you commence but if you are not sure, err on the conservative until you are better informed and can see the general level of presentation for yourself.

Can I use my mobile phone?
Of course you can, but not on the client's time! Make sure you get a voice mail facility set up, then you can turn the phone off while you are hard at work and get your messages during breaks.

All personal calls should be kept to emergencies only, or at least with your supervisor's permission.

Will you look for permanent work for me while I am temping?
Absolutely - as long as we know that's what you want! Make sure your consultant understands your needs - we have consultants who specialise in permanent work so you may need to meet them too. They can then give you up to the minute advice on the jobs available in the market today.

Can temporary work add value to my career?
Definitely. Here's how:

  • Every temp assignment can add to your skill base if you are enthusiastic about learning
  • Make sure you add details of each assignment to your resume, including what the objectives were and how you achieved them
  • If you perform well you acquire a new, favourable referee from each job you complete
  • You are given exposure to different working environments and opportunities
  • You can choose the assignments you take according to your own requirements
  • We work as a team to make sure that it does add value!

A few housekeeping issues:

Occupational Health and Safety
You will have undertaken the Online OHS induction prior to being placed in a temp/contract assignment and should therefore know what to expect once you get to the client. Please let you consultant know if you are not given an induction (including emergency procedures, etc) when you first start with the client. Your OHS responsibilities are detailed in your Payment Procedures - please ensure you know what is expected of you to protect your health and safety whilst working for us.

Software
Do not attempt to use your own software on a client's equipment. Were you to accidentally introduce a virus to their system, you could be held liable!

Confidentiality
Please read your employment conditions very carefully - once you commence an assignment with us you are obliged to abide by the Employment Declaration, including the confidentiality of any information you become aware of while on assignment as well as your pay rates.
