Hays Procurement - October 2007

Hotspots

Specialised procurement candidates with engineering, chemicals or manufacturing experience have become a hotspot due to the strong focus within water salination, sustainability and renewable resources to create a greener Australia.

Demand remains high for planning, forecasting and S&OP candidates since scheduling and forecasting is at the forefront of supply chain solutions, while category managers with experience in indirect category management are also required as companies continue to look at spend in these areas.

The coming quarter

Hiring intentions are positive for the coming quarter. Strong demand exists within the permanent sector with new opportunities created through the formation of new teams and the increasing value companies are placing in the procurement function to achieve cost savings.

While permanent requirements are high, the temporary/contract market is the definite forerunner of market activity. Contract roles have increased and range from one month to one year. With many companies reassessing their current business processes and streamlining systems and procedures, contracts exist for project work and business transformation projects, which require candidates with systems knowledge.

Executive recruitment

Permanent vacancies abound at the $100,000 - $150,000 level while both temporary and permanent roles above $150,000 will increase this quarter as new teams are created and in light of Greenfield opportunities.

Melbourne is the exception where the above $160,000 market is tight and candidates are consulting while seeking a permanent position.

Salaries

With organisations competing to attract the best talent in the industry, salaries have increased for solid candidates. We expect continued salary pressures for these staff, with companies paying at the top end of current market ranges to attract the best candidates.

However with these increased salaries comes increased employer expectations. Employers expect a higher level of responsibility and accountability in return for their increases in salaries.

Given the number of permanent opportunities available, temporary rates have also increased to attract candidates to these roles over a permanent position.

Candidate trends

Given current market buoyancy, candidate movement has increased significantly as people explore their options and seek to take advantage of the number of current positions available.

With Cipsa and Apics qualifications highly regarded, candidates are advised to gain systems and technical knowledge. With many companies going through business transformation projects or change management to streamline processes and procedures, these skills are highly worthwhile additions to your resume.
